Established in 1937, the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) is the nation’s oldest and largest progressive bar association and was the first one in the US to be racially integrated. Our mission is to use law for the people, uniting lawyers, law students, legal workers, and jailhouse lawyers to function as an effective force in the service of the people by valuing human rights and the rights of ecosystems over property interests. The Rochester NLG Chapter was formed in 2017 in response to the need for a local chapter following the arrest of more than 70 people at a Black Lives Matter protest in Rochester, NY.
We support activists through Know Your Rights trainings and publications.
The NLG Roc Hotline aims to connect folks to resources such as legal representation, arrestee rights advocates, medical/mental health resources and other supports and services.
Upon request, NLG Roc dispatches legal observers to protests to protect against illegal law enforcement actions.
